U.S. Virgin Islands Tourism & Visitor Guide
Welcome to U.S. Virgin Islands!
Out in the blissful Caribbean Sea, about 90 mi (140 km) east of Puerto Rico, three main islands, St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas, along with many smaller and historically distinct islands, make up the US Virgin Islands. An insular territory of the United States, this island cluster boasts a delightful mix of pristine beaches, warm weather and crystal-clear waters. It's a peaceful paradise for the weary and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean. As such, the islands can see upwards of 2 million visitors per year, many of whom come by cruise ship and dock in Charlotte Amalie. Located on the south side of St. Thomas, Charlotte Amalie is the capital city of the Virgin Islands and home to a deep-water harbor that was once a haven for pirates but is now a famed port. Most of the islands, including St. Thomas, are volcanic in origin and thus quite hilly in constitution. However, St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, lies to the south and features a more flush terrain than the others. Buck Island Reef is an uninhabited island off of the northeast coast of St. Croix. A National Monument, Buck Island's clear waters, amazing coral formations and flourishing marine life make it a world famous snorkeling destination.
