Welcome to St. Thomas Island!
A small island no more than 31 sq mi (80.2 sq km) in size, St. Thomas is a key
part of the
United States
Virgin Islands. This tropical paradise is home to Charlotte
Amalie, the capital of the Virgin Islands group and the most popular cruise
port in the
Caribbean Sea. The
island is mostly mountainous and white and pastel houses are sprinkled among emerald
green hills as colorful sailboats drift along a turquoise waterfront. Legend
has it that pirates made use of the island in the past and as a result, romanticized
stories of Blackbeard and Bluebeard are often heard. St. Thomas offers both active
shopping areas and quiet hideaways, and while many people visit for its spectacular
beaches, this island also boasts fantastic fishing, boating, sailing and surfing
destinations. Exploring the city of Charlotte Amalie is a rewarding experience
and easily done on foot. The
St.
Thomas Skyride—a must do attraction in the Caribbean—whisks passengers
off their feet and high above the town to
Paradise
Point. At the top, nature trails and views abound.
