U.S. Virgin Islands Banking & Taxes

CURRENCY

The local currency is the United States dollar (USD), which is broken down into 100 cents. Coins come in 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and $1 pieces, while notes are issued in 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar denominations.

TAX

There's no sales tax in the USVirgin Islands. Hhotels add 8% room tax, and some hotels also add a basic energy service charge. In addition, The St. John Accommodations Council has begun to request that vacationers offer $1 per day to help fund school and community development, but this is voluntary. TIPPING

Some hotels add an additional 10% to 15% service charge, making the additional tip optional. For those that don't, staff like porters and bellmen generally recieve $1 per bag, maids $1 or $2 per day. Special requests generally require a tip. 10% to 15% tip is customary in restaurants, although some add a service charge to the bill, making the additional tip optional. Taxi drivers have come to expect 15%.

Traveler's cheques are accepted throughout the country.

CREDIT CARDS

Most major credit cards are accepted everywhere.

BANKING HOURS AND AUTOMATED TELLERS

Banks hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00am to 3:00pm and Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm. A few banks are open Saturday 9:00am to 12:00pm. There are a few ATMs, and only at banks.
